Perfect in Pink by Alexander Jaime

Pink is the color of man it seems, by the looks of the fall/winter 16 shows this past fashion week season. From classic Thomas Pink who is known for the color, to the hot pink retro 60's vibe of the new Gucci by Allesandro Michele, one thing is for sure Pink has arrived.

Pink is set to become the new neutral tone. It is likely to surpass the current red carpet-favoured tone of mid blue which has been a favourite at the Baftas (Idris Elba), Grammys (Mark Ronson) and Cannes (Lucky Blue Smith).

As early as 1925, pink on a man was a joke, a sartorial no-no. “An Oxford man! Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit!” squawked Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. “I could think of nothing except the luminosity of his pink suit under the moon.” Jay Gatsby, the eloquent and charismatic charlatan, was pinned under the microscope for his sartorial choice.

No longer a threat to masculinity, the pastel has become a staple for everyone from rappers to politicians. From Coral, Salmon, Rose the on-trend man will be tickled pink.

Work Wanders by Alexander Jaime

By Arthurious

Renowned furniture designer Marcel Wanders of Moooi shares his views on creativity, inspiration, and on asking the right questions.

Right now, I’m homeless.

I’m not an introvert, but I’m not an extrovert either.

Balance is always a good idea.

Look for a sense of purpose and you’ll find yourself on the right path. If there’s no path, that’s even better.

If I were you, I wouldn’t wait for inspiration to come. You can tie me up to this chair and I’d still find a way to be inspired.

The brain is a magical place: if you have a question, the answer will come. The problem is, not all questions are worth answering.

There’s no place like Tokyo.

One day, I decided that I’ll be living in five different cities for the next five years. Last year, it was San Francisco. This year, I found myself in Milan.

I travel to unroot myself.

What I love about big cities is that any design object that initially looked very rational, with time and changing context, becomes irrational.

Why do I like Tokyo so much? Try standing still there in the middle of the street for five minutes. You’ll get it right then.

It’s a common misconception to think that five years in a design school will make anyone great. No one is going to teach you marketing skills, technology or chemical procedures of microscopic structures of plastic — you have to fucking study it on your own.

People always tell us, designers, to concentrate on our talent. I think it’s a stupid idea. If you are a runner who is fast in running, you are the first one to reach a hurdle. But what if jumping is not your talent?

If one day you don’t learn, you’re in the wrong place.

Concentrate on the hurdles.

You grow when it’s most inconvenient; when it’s difficult, shitty, and irritating. There’s no other way to grow.

Can I have my coffee, please?

Florals for Mankind by Alexander Jaime

A conversation with Floral Modernist, Designer Mike Hines.

mikehines1.jpg

On an unusually warm day this early May we had the pleasure of a conversation with Mike Hines. He takes a rather masculine approach to Floral Design. With the release of his new book "Uprooted" we sat down with Mr Hines and he shared with us his first thought when he wakes up, the flower every man should have in their home, and what makes the perfect man, perfect.

What's your first thought when you wake up?

Who are you?  LOL, just kidding. My very first thought: COFFEE!!

What do you wear to workout?

At the gym I wear Todd Snyder tees and sweat shorts. At Bikram I wear only a very Short pair of workout shorts. It's sweaty and if I wore anything more it would get in the way. Gotta be able to move.

What's your favorite body part? And your least favorite?

Depends on my mood...I like my head the most..it doesn't change and it's reliable. Least favorite, hmmm, my left leg. After rupturing my Achilles it's never gotten back to normal.

Boxers or briefs? Trunks or Speedos?

Briefs C-in2 and Calvin Klein 4" Trunks, Kyle King swimwear and Parke & Ronen. I used to be a swimmer in high school..I'm speedo'd out

What music is inspiring you at the moment? What’s on your phone?

I'm loving Elle King at the moment. I have her on a loop on my phone. Most of my music on my phone is mellow or pop-ish. Love Sara Bareilles and retro Meatloaf, Queen and a good dose of Adele.

How did you get into floral design?

By accident. Was on holiday in Rome 20 years ago and stumbled upon a flower shop who took me in and showed me design. It was one of those cheesy moments when you're like "whoa, I love this". Floristry allows me the medium to dive into design and pull up my know how of interior design and spark my creativity. Everyday seems different. It also lets me express myself.

When did you realize this was your space? and Epoch Floral needed to happen?

I knew in my gut I had something different to add to the floral design world. I try to follow my instinct on most everything I do in life. The idea of creating epoch, staying true to my style and persistently playing against "norms" made it an easy decision to open epoch and stay true to my design esthetic. I'm outspoken by nature and with florals I'm giving that platform to speak out all the time, flowers let me shout quietly.

Explain the concept for Uprooted your latest Book, your approach seems surprisingly refreshing?

UPROOTED was in my head for over a decade. Truly. I knew it would have a life one day but wasn't ready to dig into it until last year. The time was right.  I wanted to design original floral designs specifically for this book. Yet, I wanted to make sure I was creating designs that were truly expressions of my esthetic and self. After we shot the first pic, I knew the book would take on a sexy, masculine, moody feel. Contrary to what you'd expect from a flower book. I wanted to show the reader that flowers aren't always these pretty perky things. Because I revere floral design, great floral design, as art....UPROOTED is the antithesis to what you thought you knew. It seemed natural to me without trying so hard to make an irreverent statement. Rather, it's what I do, what's in me and my intention to get the reader to escape into a sexier mood. Frankly, it's heavy in masculinity. But, at the same time, it appeals to all genders because after all, it's flowers.

Favorite artists?

Eva Hesse, Doris Salcedo, Rothko...I'm sure I have others but these are my top.

What makes a perfect man?

Humble men are f***ing sexy.

What florals complement the perfect man’s living space? and what triggers the decision?

Men and flowers, any flowers in their space(s) is SEXY. There are no rules. However, one kind of flower, en masse, in a great vessel or a giant leaf/branch in a vase is cool and stated. Something that looks and seems and often is effortless.

Where do you go to switch off?

The desert, any desert that has a spa and a great hotel/resort.

Three products you can't live without?

Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion, Baxter Face Moisturizer and Le Labo Santal 26 everything.

If you had a choice, where would you choose to spend your last day on earth?

At the tranquility pool at the Four Seasons Hualalai... pure bliss.

The Perfect Man is a humble man, humble men are f****ing sexy.

Dr. Justin James by Alexander Jaime

dr.james.jpg

We had the opportunity of interviewing Dr. Justin James, a New Yorker with a rather inspiring opinion of the self, the importance of the power nap and what makes the perfect man.

What's your first thought when you wake up?

I would like to say my FIRST thought is how excited I am for the day, but it’s actually my second. The first thought, embarrassingly enough, is “What day is it??”. I need to reorient myself to get out of my initial daze.

How do you deal with tiredness?

I try to avoid this at all costs, especially when I work 6-7 days a week, but sometimes it happens despite my structured and routine sleeping habits. On those days I find a 20 minute power nap after work most effective.

Coffee or tea?

If Snapple counts as tea, then Diet Peach

How can we get the Dr. James physique?

Haha - thank you. I eat healthy and exercise 5 days a week. I haven’t found any shortcuts - it takes hard work and dedication.

What's your favorite sport?

Gymnastics.  I am fascinated how gymnasts can do the wildest tricks. Some look like they are defying gravity.  It’s the closest thing to having superpowers, and who doesn’t love that?!

Gym or personal trainer?

Gym out of habit, but a trainer would be great to learn new routines.  It’s difficult for me to get creative.

What’s on your iPhone for workout music at the moment?

I like fast-beats to keep my energy up, but also something melodic so it's enjoyable. Right now I have some great remixes of Rufus Du Sol and Aquillo

What do you wear to workout?

Something light. Usually a black tank, shorts and comfortable flyknit sneakers.

How do you describe your personal style?

That’s a good question, I’ve never been asked to label my style. Outside of work, I would say I dress minimalistic and clean.  I also get shy with bright colors and patterns.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM @DR.JAMES.NYC

Boxers or briefs?

Actually both! Briefs with jeans, and boxers with scrubs.

A fragrance?

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

What's your favorite body part? And your least favorite?

I would say my face is both my favorite and least favorite. Not any part in particular but overall. My face is the first thing people see and it’s important to showcase and be proud of that. It’s my least favorite for the same reason. Good skin care takes time and maintaining my beard can be a chore.

What made you become a psychiatrist, and what is the most challenging aspect of it and the most rewarding thing about it?

I applied to medical school knowing I wanted to be a psychiatrist. I had a passion for mental health and human behavior since freshman year in college. I think my curiosity stemmed from Real World Seattle when I was 12 years old, and seeing Stephen slap Irene in the car and thought “What the hell were they thinking?!”. It’s a strange memory, I know, but it got me thinking.

I would say that the most challenging thing is that the problems I encounter each day are personal, and often relatable. It isn't about dealing with a broken foot or torn ligament (no offense to my fellow orthopedic surgeons). I am managing people's emotions, thoughts, and fears. The situations hit much closer to home. Those are all struggles we deal with as humans and they can be complicated. There is no exact science to dealing with the mind, at least not yet.

I think one rewarding piece is the ability to give my patients tools to lead happy, stable lives. The best thing I can hope for is the point in which a patient reached optimal benefit from treatment and has best quality of life.

Where do you go to switch off?

I live in New York City, so sometimes it’s hard to find a place to completely switch off – but being alone is usually my best option. Whether it’s walking through a pretty neighborhood, visiting the park, or just closing the door to my room and reading – if I can get myself to a place where I am alone, it’s easier to switch.

What makes a perfect man?

Humility, Happiness and Confidence. It’s not impossible to transform yourself physically to become the best version. What makes a man perfect is the awareness that we are all the same and we are all in this together. Men who are happy with themselves and their lives, who are naturally confident, are attractive. Lastly, the perfect man looks out for others and does the right thing even if no one is looking.

Boxers or briefs?

Depends on the situation.

Trunks or Speedos?

Trunks, but not too long.

As a model, how do you make yourself comfortable in front of the camera?

Just by being myself.

As a photographer, whats the biggest difference between being in front of the camera and behind it?

I feel when you are in front of the camera there is a lot less things to worry about. But when I’m taking pictures there are more responsibilities on my shoulders such as the light, focus, and the model.

When shooting a recently new model girl or guy what do you look for?

Someone who is comfortable in front of the camera and easy to direct.

What are some of your favorite moments of your modeling career?

This is a tough one, there is no way I can pick a favorite moment. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with amazing people and going to breathtaking places. One day you could be shooting in London and the next you off to Paris or Barcelona. I feel very fortunate and lucky.

What makes a perfect man?

Somebody that is confident and comfortable in their own skin.

A fragrance?

Tous Man Intense.

Three products you can't live without?

Fragrance, Lip balm and face lotion.

Where do you go to switch off?

The Gym.

True Self – Simon Sava by Alexander Jaime

What is the most unexpected thing that’s ever happened to you while traveling for your blog?

One thing that I really remember was the day I lost my passport in Marrakesh. And they had just told me at the hotel, "If you lose your passport in Marrakesh, you are stuck in Marrakesh." Fortunately it was found and safely kept in a museum in the Medina.

What are your top international choices for men seeking 1 revelry, 2 relaxation, 3 reinvention?

My top destinations for revelry are Mykonos in Greece and Barcelona in Spain. For relaxation during summer, I really love Santorini - in a beautiful hotel with an infinity pool overlooking the volcano, or a luxurious accommodation on the Amalfi coast in Italy. During wintertime, a five-star chalet in the Swiss Alps is my top choice. When a man wants to reinvent himself, Marrakesh is a destinantion I would definetely recommend.

What makes a place truly memorable for you?

For a place to be truly memorable to me, it must have it all. Not just beautiful ladscapes and views - it needs also to be vibrant, with the best accommodation and restaurant choices, and of course nice people.

If you had a choice, where would you choose to spend your last day on earth?

My last day on earth, I would probably consider more with whom I'll spend it than where. A day at the beach with my family and friends would be perfect.

Where are you excited to visit this year?

I am very spontaneous and I don't usually plan my trips many days before. Lets see what this year will bring...

Is there any place you’ve traveled so far to which you wouldn’t return? Why?

None. I often catch my self saying I want to go back to many places again. Actually - I do go back - so I guess it's a matter of good choices. ;)

How do fashion and travel influence each other, in your opinion?

I believe both fashion and traveling influence each other a lot. When you travel you get to know new cultures and different lifestyles that make you want to try something new with your style. Also fashion brands often grab an idea for their collections based on a culture, or they use colors inspired by a country. Finally, fashion can make you want to go to a beautiful place while you are looking at a campaign that was shot there.

What are your “must have” travel items?

Definitely my iPhone. I couldn't capture and share the moment without it.

How do you describe your personal style?

My personal style is more casual. I really like being comfortable, but always with style. I also often try new trends - why not something more edgy?

In your opinion, what is a Perfect Man? What does it take to be the Perfect Man?

The perfect man is actually someone not necessarily perfect but genuine and maybe imperfect. It's a man doing what he likes, being himself and not faking it in order to look perfect. Maybe there is more perfection in flaws.

You’ve really mastered the art of building a lifestyle brand - what are your best tips for other bloggers looking to do something similar?

Staying true to your self is the best tip I could give. Keep doing what you love. Just take a picture of it.

Breakfast with David by Alexander Jaime

Photo: Rodolfo Martinez

On a fall morning this early November we had the pleasure of chatting with Supermodel and Photographer David Genat, the face of Mont Blanc Emblem fragrance and Massimo Dutti, during the shoot for our upcoming photo story. He made us coffee (which he's quite an expert at) and shared with us his likes, how he stays fit and what makes the perfect man.

What's your first thought when you wake up?

Well usually when I wake up I’m thinking about getting coffee into my body so its something related to that.

How do you take care of your body?

At the moment I’m strength training 3 days a week tuesday, thursday and sunday. Ill do 2 -3 Muay Thai training sessions and 2-3 jiu jitsu sessions a week and I'll do a little running when I have time. I try to work out almost everyday sometimes twice a day and take saturdays off.

How do you deal with tiredness?

This probably comes back to my first thought for the morning haha because i do love coffee, but I try generally not to eat sugar or simple carbohydrates and if i can eat clean and drink plenty of water i have a lot of energy.

What's your favorite sport?

I really love Mixed Martial Arts.

How can we get the David Genat physique?

Find a physical activity that you love and really get into it, For me that was Brazilian jiu jitsu (11 years of training), I train I feel like I’m learning something and I really love what I’m doing so it pushes me to keep going, I find learning a physical skill much easier then trying to stay motivated at a gym.

Gym or personal trainer?

Personal trainer because it will keep you accountable to someone. Or get into some kind of training program.

A detox drink?

Carrot Ginger and Kale.

How do you keep yourself motivated during a workout?

I always find that showing up is half the battle and then having a clear plan of what you want to achieve for that session.

Do you follow an eating plan to keep your energy up?

Yeah as I mentioned earlier I stay away from sugar and simple carbs but I really like the Paleo diet if I’m eating clean.

What’s on your iPhone for workout music at the moment?

Classic Rock Power Workout Radio on Pandora.

What do you wear to workout?

I like short shorts so i usually rock some running shorts and a t-shirt.

What's your favorite body part?

On me its my arms in general I have a weird thing for shoulders and backs.

And your least favorite?

I'm not a huge fan of my thighs they have always been strong since I was a kid and it would bug me.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM @DAVIDGENAT

Boxers or briefs?

Briefs.

Trunks or Speedos?

They both have their place but probably trunks.

As a model, how do you make yourself comfortable in front of the camera?

Being prepared physically is a big part knowing your in good shape and feeling good translates well on film. For me the easiest trick to getting comfortable on set is just being friendly to people and getting to know them a little bit in the limited time you have so you don’t feel like a stranger and everyone has more fun.

As a photographer, whats the biggest difference between being in front of the camera and behind it?

Even though they both work hand in hand in terms of knowing how a shoot or a set works etc they are pretty much worlds apart, The responsibility is the biggest difference because at the end of the day the photographer is responsible for the final product..

When shooting a recently new model girl or guy what do you look for?

Honestly I just like shooting with nice, cool people, I look for people who are down to try interesting stuff who are open and not “trying” to look good or like a “model”. I like characters and people with strong personality.

What makes a perfect man?

Someone with confidence thats not overbearing and someone who is genuinely kind.

Tell us about your tattoo?

Yeah I kind of have a bizarre tattoo on my ribs, It started with a little ode to a piece I saw that Murakami had done and then I just kept adding bits and pieces onto it, I have initials for family members and loved ones and then things that mean nothing but I really like bright colors and fortunately I have an amazing friend Sara Lou in LA who has done my last 8 hours or so of work, I just tell her what I’m thinking and she figures out something cool.

A fragrance?

Mont Blanc Emblem of course!!!

Three products you can't live without?

As much as I hate to admit it my iPhone, but I really love my motorcycle and little old snappy camera Lumix LX3.

Where do you go to switch off?

There's a couple of Beaches in my home town of Perth Western Australia that nothing comes close to and I’m pretty fortunate to get home a couple times a year and thats when i switch off and fully relax.

A country?

Australia!!!

A gym?

Renzo Gracie Academy.

A barber?

I've been working the long hair angle for a while now so I can’t really recommend a barber.

A spa?

Great Jones Spa.

A restaurant?

Spaghetti Incident on Eldridge Street.

A hairdresser?

Tom Davitt at Spoke and Weal in Soho.

Raf Simons rethinks the classic men's shoe with a red strap and buckle. The New Bespoke by Alexander Jaime

Thom Browne's new studio-showroom in midtown is nothing short of his aesthetic—the two-floor space utilitizes Browne's signature color palette of grays mixed with terrazzo floors. After the end of his partnership with Brooks Brothers on their Black Fleece line, his new venture is a made-to-measure suit service with long time tailor Rocco Ciccarelli. Rocco has worked with every menswear design in New York. Thom is following in a path much like Tom Ford, and Ermenegildo Zegna, the future of luxury is bespoke.

I design in a way that I think speaks to everyone—although there’s an American sensibility, in that there’s a sports reference and a little bit of an ease to it.
