MR. KIT CLARKE
What are your first thoughts on awakening in the morning?
I’m so happy I finally slept well.
Do you sing in the shower?
No but I often perform Monologues from movies in them.
Coffee or Tea?
Tea.
Who or what inspired you to become an actor?
I’ve always had a performative side to me. I guess I realized I could be quite entertaining when I tried. Then I started watching other very good actors, first DiCaprio, then Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Sean Penn and Daniel Day Lewis. I fell in love with parts of all of them, it’s hard not to be inspired when you watch them.
Your performance as the iconic Rupert Everett in Lost And Found in Paris, Would you say that he is one of your most complex characters?
As he is a real person, and a very interesting one, definitely. There are infinite layers to his character that I can delve into, the script is great and allows me to do that.
What was it like working alongside John Malkovich, Kristin Scott Thomas?
We start shooting next year – I’ll report back.
Many actors are fascinated by characters with a dark side. Does it happen to you too?
Yes, I am. I think it’s because every person has a dark side and dark thoughts once in a while. It’s a part of human nature. The fact that it is called the ‘dark/ bad’ side makes it seem something elusive and mysterious, which I think adds to the intrigue. It certainly does for me.
Do you have any secret desire to work with a certain director? and why?
I’ve always loved Ang Lee. I remember hearing Heath Ledger talking about Ang directing him in Brokeback Mountain. He just kept telling Heath to ‘be still, be still’ which is such a powerful thing on screen, but also a style of direction that requires a lot of confidence. So yes, Ang Lee, Kathryn Bigelow, and of course Scorsese.
Professionally, what are you better at now than before?
Lying.
Are you of method or guts?
Method and guts.
An actor or actress you admire?
Sean Penn. He’s a very pure actor and also isn’t afraid to break stereotypes and follow his own path.
How do you feel about the shift from motion picture to the series paradigm happening at the moment?
I think it’s great for the audience because there is just so much to watch now. However, I think people will always hold a special place for a motion picture. I know I do. It is the essence of a cinema experience and is to me a cleaner way to tell a story.
MR. KIT CLARKE
Have you ever felt typecast?
Yes, but that’s okay and understandable. In my experience, I seem to only ever get the roles I’m passionate about. I guess that’s because it comes from a true place. When its right for you, its right and you feel it in your bones.
What social issue are you most passionate about?
Bullying. I got bullied at school and I’ve always wanted to fight for the little guy, because that was once me.
What the last book you read and what do you think about it?
Charles Bukowski - Last Night of the Earth Poems. I love his poetry, he’s very grounding and truthful.
What scares you?
Not doing what I love. And love.
Have you ever felt typecast?
Yes, but that’s okay and understandable. In my experience, I seem to only ever get the roles I’m passionate about. I guess that’s because it comes from a true place. When its right for you, its right and you feel it in your bones.
And what makes you angry?
Most things do before I’ve eaten a good meal, and very little does after I’ve eaten one.
How important is the sense of humor in your day to day?
Well it depends on the day really, if I’m on set and around a lot of people, humor is important as a social lubricant. I guess when I’m alone, watching movies, it is too. However, it’s always important to be able to take some things seriously.
What do you do to stay fit?
I don’t do much really, maybe I should start running or something.
What’s something you could eat for a week straight?
My mother’s Tuna Pasta Bake. It’s my Death Row meal.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple, classic.
What cologne do you wear if any?
It’s a good one, but it’s hard to find and will be even more hard to find if I say. Sorry.
Boxers or Briefs?
Boxers. Briefs if I’m playing a 65 year old man.
Do you have any vices?
Making jokes at inappropriate times. But isn’t it more fun/ thrilling that way?
Ocean or Mountain?
Mountain, unless it’s a David Attenborough documentary, and then I always watch the water ones.
Motorcycle or car?
Car.
Dogs or cats?
Dogs (Sorry to my childhood cats: Buzzy, Smokey, Sunny and Luna I love you all.)
Friday or Sunday?
Either. You’ll find me in the cinema on both days.
Who do you think are the most exciting people in the world today?
I think the people I know are, and anyone I’m going to meet and get to know is. Everyone is exciting in some way, you just have to look for it. But also Jack Nicholson. I mean he’s a complete legend, and he’s living somewhere right now, JACK!
Name a woman or man you find sexy?
Marlon Brando, Al Pacino…Jack again.
Do you think it’s important for a man to be sexy?
I think its important for a man to know who he is, and where he is going, and be passionate about something. And I think those things are sexy, so yes, sure.
