What are your first thoughts on awakening in the morning?
Can I do this? Oh my God, can I do this? Wake up? It’s hard to leave dreamland. It’s even more difficult to bring dreamland everywhere you go in the “real” world.
Do you sing in the shower?
I have an old General Electric radio I stole from my father when I headed west. It sits in the window sill of my bathroom. That’s a hell yes; I screech in the shower.
Cat or Dog?
They are both beautiful animals and both love unconditionally. My love for dogs is not greater than cats. I just have an Angel and she is a dog. Cats are angels too.
A favorite movie?
“One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.” I used to write to Jack. “I’m your biggest fan.” Therefore, we shall never meet.
A food?
My wife’s “Raspberry Caves.” I’m no sweetie, but the kisses in her recipe make them addicting.
Who is on repeat in your playlist.
Richie Havens. “Live at the Cellar Door and the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.” I have been playing bongos with him everyday to these songs for the last month. I feel I’m really up there with his soul.

What inspired you to pursue acting?
You know, the movies did. The “arts and crafts” of filmmaking really did. They were my escape as an adolescent and still are. But I can’t remember where the light bulb flipped on.
Your performance as Winston in 13 Reasons Why has conjured comparisons to a young James Franco with the intensity of Marlon Brando, how do feel about that?
I can’t walk the walk with those guys yet. James Franco is so skilled and he is so free with his body and spirit; it is wonderful watching him. I love his movies. Mr. Brando? I have no comment on that. He was and still is holding The Best male actor who ever lived. He knew himself like a monk. Better than anyone could ever know themselves, therefore, he knew what he was capable of. Which was a limitless horizon.
How much are you like the character of Winston or how different?
I might like him as a friend. We did have some interesting conversations about each other. I really don't know how much I’m like Winston since I have a hard time describing who I am.
Do you have any secret desire to work with a certain director? and why?
I don’t really. I mean if Hal Ashby was still alive. I look forward to working with people and having discussions about the “in-betweens” of social obligations. And the building of a person who can spread the message of hope or the line of life that is no way just A to B. So whomever that is, I’m sure we will have some fun.
What social issue are you most passionate about?
The injustice of Black Lives. I’m educating myself in search of the truth. “When the truth is found, to be lies” (Jefferson Airplane). People should watch “13th” if you have Netflix. Mind-blowing documentary. I’m so sick of the lies.
What is the last book you read and what do you think about it?
“The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin. One of the most amazing reads. Stepping into the life and daily living of a black man. “The subtle and deadly change of heart that might occur in you would be involved with the realization that a civilization is not destroyed by wicked people; it is not necessary that people be wicked but only that they be spineless.” ― James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time.
