Photography by Blake Ballard
It’s no wonder actor Chido Nwokocha has assumed the lead role of complex charmer in Tyler Perry’s new series, “Sistas.” Chido comes from a family of seven and his film acclaims include “Destroyer” with Nicole Kidman, and the long-awaited “Top Gun: Maverick” with Tom Cruise. He wears glasses (at home) and secretly wants to take part in an action flick like John Wick.

What are your first thoughts on awakening in the morning?
That I am happy to be alive. I don’t take things like waking up each day, walking, vision, etc. for granted. It’s a blessing.
What do you do when you get up in the morning?
I say a prayer and give thanks for another day to live. I also read a verse or a motivational quote to start my day. I always try to start with something positive because it sets the tone for my early mindset on the day.
Do you sing in the shower?
ALL THE TIME! I cannot express that enough.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am Nigerian and the second of seven children. I grew up in Sacramento, California where I played sports my entire life. Went to junior college for two years before I earned an athletic scholarship to play football at Ohio University. I graduated with my degree in Health Administration and spent some time post college in the (UFL) United Football League and (AFL) Arena Football League. I am extremely family oriented; my family, my siblings are everything to me. Got into acting after football and caught the bug, packed my bags and made the move to LA in 2015 to chase the dream, and I haven’t looked back ever since.
Having played professional football, what does your exercise regimen look like?
I workout anywhere from 4 to 6 days a week. It depends on how my shoot schedule is and the way my body feels. Consistency is key. Whether I am in the weight room, outside running or doing a HIT workout I try to stay active throughout the week. It helps me feel at my best at all times.

Who is on repeat in your playlist?
Pop Smoke’s deluxe album “Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon,” Gunna’s “Wunna” deluxe album and Burna Boy’s “Twice as Tall“ album are all currently on repeat. In the house, at the gym or on the road, it gets a play.
Who inspired you to pursue acting?
You know I have always wanted to pursue acting since I was younger. I just felt a stronger bond to football at the time. Watching Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Jaimie Foxx early on was very inspiring. I knew it was something I could do if really went for it.
How did it feel the first time you watched yourself on the big screen?
It was surreal. Something that I have always envisioned and to see it happening was awesome. I’m still taken aback by it sometimes. I don’t know if it will ever feel routine. It’s a major accomplishment and something that is fresh every time I watch.
How much are you like the character of Gary Marshall Borders you play on Tyler Perry’s “Sistas” or how different?
WE ARE NOT THE SAME! Haha, well I guess I can say we are both driven and passionate individuals. I can for sure tell you we differ in our temperament and our forms of communication.
Of all the roles you have played which one do you remember being the most challenging for you and why?
My current role portaying Gary Marshall Borders on “Sistas” has definitely been my most challenging. The character is different from any other role I’ve played; along with him being far from who I am as a person. Though very successful, he’s a very emotional person who wears his heart on his sleeve and goes after what he wants. That can yield both positive and negative results. Which makes for a very fun and complex character to portray on screen.
What was it like to work with the Mr. Tom Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick this past year?
The experience was incredible. When you dream of being an actor the goal is to get on that big screen in theatres on a big budget production. Having the opportunity to do that and see how and what goes into making such a big movie was something special. Everyone knows Tom Cruise, everyone knows “Top Gun.” I get to say that I am a part of that and that makes me happy and want to continue work for more opportunities to be a part of these types of movies.
Day or Night shoots?
Day shoots I like to get up and get it done. I need my nights to myself, lol preferably.

Do you wear glasses?
Yes, I do! Normally wear those at home.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple, casual. You know, I’m a t-shirt, sweats and sneaker type of guy. You can find me in that all the time. When I’m home, I am shirtless with a pair of shorts or sweats on, I like to be comfortable. But I enjoy a good dress up too. An occasional suit or a nice dress shirt and nice shoes is always fun.

Racial injustice, equality and education is a fight that is still ongoing. It has been unavoidable to not see what is clear and in your face in our country. Especially this year with tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd; it made America take a hard look at race relations in our country as well as across the world. Also, the pandemic directly impacting marginalized communities both economically and medically. There is still a constant fight for basic needs and treatment of Black people. We have made small strides with bringing awareness of these issues, but there is still more work to be done. For many black individuals like myself, we must and will continue to press forward, let our voices be heard, and help in any way we can.
