THE PERFECT MAN
What are your first thoughts on awakening in the morning?
My bed is my favorite place in the world so no matter how many hours of sleep I get, my first thought when my alarm goes off is that I want to sleep an extra hour. If I have something exciting going on that day though, I usually wake up and play high energy music to set the tone.
Coffee or Tea?
If only one could exist, coffee, but I’m a sucker for matcha.
Do you sing in the shower? If so, what was the last song?
Constantly. The reverb is just too good. I’m always singing Amy Winehouse when there’s good acoustics so probably Back to Black or Valerie.
Where are you from and how has your family’s background impacted your life?
I’m from Sao Paulo, Brasil, raised in the US. My mom is from Rome, but our family history is heavily between Brazil and Italy with some other cultures thrown in the mix. I feel lucky that I travelled a lot when I was younger and was exposed to so many cultures and languages. It shaped most of who I am today - my tastes, my style, how I am with people.
Do you speak any other languages?
Portuguese and some Spanish. When I’m in Italy I gain back a lot of the Italian I lost.
When did you first become interested in making music?
Music has always been a big part of my life, but my transition into honing my musical side only started a few years ago. I was doing music for fun, but as I put covers out and made more musician friends, I realized I kept saying I wasn't a musician when I was. I’m very passionate about it, and a lot of what I always said I “couldn't do,” was, in fact, second nature to me as I started taking it seriously.
What inspired your latest single “New York”?
I have a lot of memories in New York of a different, happier time in my life, and when I sat to write this song, I shared with one of my co-writers, Leslie Powell, how I had this immense fear of going back to that city because I was nervous that it would bring up all these memories that I had been avoiding. And she was the one who encouraged me to write from the perspective of being there for the first time. It was the jumping point for what the song became.
What music acts do you personally listen to?
Amy Winehouse, SZA, Adele, Billie Eilish, Rosalia. My music taste is always changing, and ranges heavily between genres, but mostly I just love vocalists and lyricists.
How do you juggle an acting and music career, has the past year impacted the balance?
I feel I am the best actor when I am also heavily involved in my other passions. When I am working on music, it feeds my emotions for acting. When I am working on a script, I spark ideas for songs. When I am writing stories, I inspire the character I’m working on in a project. It’s all connected, and when I realized that, I felt supercharged and leaned in to always being creatively busy.
What time of the day are you most inspired?
Very early morning, and very late at night unfortunately. I have an infinite amount of notes in my iPhone with thoughts and ideas so I don’t lose them.
Do you get bored easily?
If I’m not working on something actively, I do feel like I just kinda float around. It’s less boredom and more lack of feeding my drive. I don’t like feeling idle.
How did you get into acting?
I started in drama class for fun, but quickly realized I was taking it more seriously than a lot of my peers. When I saw River Phoenix in Stand by Me, something sparked within where I realized It wasn't a hobby or career that you could do when you grow up. I shifted into pursuing it relentlessly when I saw how close in age we were, and his incredible performance.
THE PERFECT MAN
Do you have any secret desire for a particular role?
My dream is to do a period piece. I love the idea of playing a historic figure as well. I played him on stage before, but roles like Amadeus Mozart or even King Tut, Alexander the Great - any figure that would require a lot of research and transformation really excites me.
How are you like Bad Boy Logan, your upcoming role on “He’s All That” and how are you not like him?
I think I was more like him in middle school. Being a class clown and hanging out with a circle that I’d never go near if it were today. I think the only similarity between he and I are the earrings I wear in the film. They were mine.
Any awkward humbling moments you recall from shooting Teen Wolf your “breakout” series or Jane the Virgin?
Only awkward moment for me was joining the cast so late in the series, it was a bit overwhelming to arrive on a set where everyone was practically family. That didn't last long though. I think attending the fan conventions in the aftermath of the series was extremely humbling. To see the impact the series has on so many people was mind blowing.
Which fictional character would be the most exciting to meet in real life?
Would love a chat with Dumbledoor or Han Solo.
Do you have any vices?
I’m a huge foodie so I think my spending in that arena is my biggest vice. I need to calm down now more than ever since restaurants are just starting to open again and I’ve been going zero to one hundred.
Do you wear glasses?
Only for certain auditions and characters. Here and there for style.
Do you read books? If so what was the last one?
I’m a huge audiobook person. Last series I finished was the Thrawn, Star Wars series.
A quote that speaks to you?
There’s so many, but recently I read one that said, “No one sees what I see. Even if they see it too.” I felt that.
How would you describe your personal style?
I’d say monochromatic encompasses it pretty well. I love wearing one tone or color head to toe. My style definitely shifts day to day though. It’s the actor in me that likes dressing based on the persona I’m putting out that day.
THE PERFECT MAN
Boxers or briefs?
Calvin Klein boxer briefs.
Do you think it’s important for a man to be sexy?
I think it’s nice to do things for yourself that make you feel confident, but it's subjective. Trying to be anything is never sexy. Just leading with confidence.
A favorite cologne?
Tuscan Leather by TOM FORD, but I really don’t love strong scents in general. I don’t wear anything scented.
What do you do to relax?
I always need a good show to put on and wind down. Playing and making music with friends is also an amazing exhale for me. Day trips and beach days if I’m trying to reset my energy.
What makes you very happy?
Sushi and Italian food, traveling, and when all my friends are with me.
Cat or Dog?
I’m allergic to both. Owls.
What does your exercise regimen look like? Do you play any sport?
I’ve never been a sports kid, always an art kid. I do train daily though. Nothing crazy, just eating healthy and working out. Right now I’ve been training seriously with a trainer, Seth Broadstreet, five times a week.
What qualities do you seek in your male friends?
I love when my friends have common threads with me, but different interests. It’s nice when they can teach you about their world and introduce you to circles outside your own. I gravitate to sensitive people and people with drive.
What would be your superpower?
Teleportation so I can travel without the airport and flying part.
Who do you think are the most exciting people in the world today?
Anyone who is authentically challenging the norms that have been in place forever and no one questioned it.
What makes a perfect man in 2021?
For anyone, 2021 one is about being the best version of yourself. After all that darkness comes light. It’s time to step into our power and use all the built up energy we stowed away in 2020.
